The following biographical information, published in 1985, is quoted from the St. Mary's Catholic Church Centennial, Remsen, Iowa, 100 Years, 1885-1985 , page 208.

DONALD HUGHES (1912-1989)

"Donald, son of Patrick and Leonie (Kieffer) Hughes, was born December 12, 1912 on a farm south of Remsen. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1930 and worked at the Frank Wentz Grocery Store during his school years. After graduation he worked at the First Trust and Savings Bank. In 1933 he moved to the farm with his parents and brother, Richard.

"Rosina, daughter of John and Rose (Bohnenkamp) Ludwig, grew up on a farm south of Remsen. She attended St. Mary's School where she received her religious training.

"Donald and Rosina were married in September of 1936 at St. Mary's Church in Remsen and they established their home on the Hughes Family farm. They are the parents of two children: Patrick, who married Dianne Herrig, lives at Rock Rapids, and they have three children, Lisa, Chris and Shannon; and Nancy, married to Jack Callahan, works for I.B.M. She lives at Greencastle, Indiana, and has two children, Sean and Kerri.

"Donald was secretary and treasurer of the Remsen Township school district until its merger with Remsen-Union. He was the first leader of a 4-H club in Remsen and was director of Farmer's Co-op for 21 years, nine of which he acted as president. In 1950 he was elected as director of the First Trust and Savings Bank and still holds that office. He has been a member of the election board for more than two decades. He is a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

"Rosina has been active in church work. She supervised the baking of altar breads for St. Mary's for [page 209] over 25 years. She is a member of the Christian Mothers and is a past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters. She has always been a zealous worker and an active member of the Catholic Missionary Association.

"In 1964, Donald and Rosina retired to Remsen where they are living at the present time."
